Free Fire is a battle royale shooter from Garena, built specifically for lower-end phones — which is the main reason it reached the audience it did in regions where the larger battle royales run poorly.
A match drops around fifty players onto an island. You parachute in, scavenge weapons, armour and medical supplies from buildings, and fight until one player or squad remains. A shrinking safe zone forces survivors together, so matches end in close-quarters fights rather than long stalemates. A full round runs about ten minutes, considerably shorter than most games in the genre.
Its distinguishing feature is the character system. Rather than a uniform roster, each playable character carries a passive or active ability — faster healing, brief invisibility while crouched, increased movement after a knockdown — so squad composition affects how a fight plays out, not just individual aim.
Modes include solo, duo and four-player squads, alongside rotating limited-time formats such as Clash Squad, a shorter round-based mode with a buy phase between rounds.
Free to play on Android, monetised through cosmetics, characters and a battle pass. None of the purchasable items increase weapon damage.
