Find My is Apple's device-location service, combining what were previously two separate features — Find My iPhone for hardware and Find My Friends for people — into one app across Apple's platforms.
Its primary purpose is locating a lost or stolen device on a map. Beyond the map it can play a sound at full volume even if the device is silenced, display a custom message with a contact number on the lock screen, and switch on Lost Mode to lock the device remotely. If recovery becomes impossible, it can erase the device remotely.
Activation Lock is the part that matters most against theft. It ties the device to its Apple Account, so a stolen iPhone cannot be reset and reused without the original account credentials, which removes most of the resale value.
The offline finding network is what makes it work when a device has no connection of its own. Devices broadcast a secure, rotating Bluetooth identifier that any nearby Apple device can relay anonymously and end-to-end encrypted, so a lost item can be located through other people's hardware without either party learning anything about the other. The same network locates AirTags and compatible third-party accessories.
Find My covers iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods and AirTags, and is accessible from any of them or from iCloud.com in a browser. It is free and requires an Apple Account with the feature enabled before the device is lost.
